What Does Low Sperm Count Mean?
Low sperm count means fewer sperm are present in the semen than expected. This may reduce the chance of natural conception, but it does not necessarily mean pregnancy is impossible. The significance depends on the semen result as a whole, including sperm motility, morphology and the couple’s overall fertility situation.
Low sperm count can be associated with:
varicocele
hormonal problems
prior testosterone or anabolic steroid use
genetic factors
testicular problems
medical or lifestyle contributors
sometimes no clear cause
How Is Low Sperm Count Investigated and Treated?
Assessment usually involves review of your semen analysis, medical history, examination and selected blood tests. In some men, repeat semen analysis, hormonal testing, ultrasound or genetic testing may also be recommended.
Treatment depends on the cause. Options may include addressing reversible factors, stopping fertility-suppressing testosterone where appropriate, treating selected varicoceles, medical therapy in some cases, or planning assisted reproduction when needed.
If you have been told you have a low sperm count, specialist male fertility assessment can help clarify the cause and the most appropriate next step.
