Do I need one 24-hour urine collection or two?

Where possible, perform the test while following your usual diet, fluid intake and normal daily routine.
Record the Start Time
At the start of the collection, empty your bladder as instructed and record the exact time. Follow the pathology instructions regarding the first sample.
Collect Every Sample
Collect all urine passed during the collection period. Missing a sample can make the results less reliable.
Complete the Full 24 Hours
Finish at the instructed time the following day and return the containers according to your pathology provider's instructions.
The purpose of the initial collection is usually to understand your typical stone-forming environment. Unless specifically instructed otherwise, continue your usual intake so potentially modifiable factors can be identified.
When should 24-hour urine testing be performed?
Metabolic testing is generally most useful once an acute stone episode has settled and you are back in your usual environment, eating and drinking normally.
The objective is to measure your usual urinary chemistry rather than temporary changes caused by acute pain, illness, dehydration or major changes in diet.

Does kidney stone prevention mean following a restrictive diet?
Usually not. Prevention should generally start with a healthy, sustainable eating pattern rather than eliminating multiple food groups.

“My stone contains calcium — should I stop eating calcium?”
Usually not. Calcium-containing kidney stones do not automatically mean that dietary calcium should be restricted. Dietary calcium consumed with food can bind oxalate within the gut and reduce the amount absorbed into the body.
A very low-calcium diet may therefore be counterproductive for some calcium oxalate stone formers and may also have implications for bone health. Advice should take account of the stone type, urine results and overall nutritional requirements.
Do I need another 24-hour urine test later?
Sometimes. Repeat testing can show whether changes in fluid intake, nutrition or medical treatment have altered the urinary risk factors identified on the original collection.
This can be particularly helpful when a significant metabolic abnormality has been identified or targeted preventive treatment has been started.
The timing and frequency of repeat testing are individualised rather than identical for every stone former.

Does everyone with a kidney stone need a 24-hour urine test?

Should I drink extra water during the test?

What does low urine volume mean?

Should I stop eating calcium if I have calcium stones?
